Basis in reality
Although the film's events are grandly fictional, its claims about Nome's
missing persons history and frequent visits by the FBI are not; since the 1960s, countless Native visitors to the town have reportedly vanished, some whose disappearances were never solved. Ten persons have gone missing in the town since 1990.
[10]A reported 24 cases were forwarded to the FBI by Nome Police for their "mysterious" nature; all of the missing persons appeared to be Natives. Seventeen of the twenty were men, and eight of the twenty-four were never found; those who were discovered died under "suspicious" circumstances.
[10]According to a list of compiled UFO sightings from 1988, several purported claims were made in the town of Nome in late August of that year; witnesses reported seeing odd lights in their rear view mirrors while driving on Beltz Road outside of the town. Others claimed to have seen "glowing men" on the same road that evening.
[11]At the time of the film's release, the city's mayor, Denise Michels, stated: "People need to realize that this is a
science fiction thriller [...] We watched the trailer on the internet, and the first scenes are these majestic mountains with these trees, which is totally not Nome. We're pretty flat, right by the ocean. What they should've done is premiered here at the local theater", she said, laughing.
