February retail sales rose +1.7% (exp +1.2%, Prev +2.15), buoyed by strong consumer
spending, breaking the CAD30 bln mark for the first time. In constant dollars,
retail sales advanced 1.7% in Feb and 2.3% in January. Ex-autos, seasonally
adjusted sales were +1.3% (Exp +0.5%).
All retail sectors showed gains in February except general merchandise
stores (-0.4%). Half of all sectors posted gains in excess of 2%, led by
clothing (+4.1%), building supplies (+2.4%), automotive (+2.4%), and furniture &
electronics (+2.2%). Food was up 1.4%, miscellaneous +1.1%, pharmacies +0.6%).
The settlement of the Quebec liquor store strike boosted food and beverage
sales, with a 9% jump in beer, wine, and liquor offsetting a 0.3% drop in
supermarket sales.
Sales rose in all provinces, ranging from +0.8% in Ontario to 8.3% in PEI.
Retail sales ex-Autos rose by 1.3% in February (exp +0.5%). Year over year,
retail sales are up 5.5%, ex-autos +5.4%. Seasonally adjusted, retail sales are
up +7.7% year-over-year, +8.0% ex-autos.
